Many children living in slums simply don't go to school. There are many reasons for this. One is a lack of money, forcing the children to have to work so there is enough food on the table. Added to this is the fact that many parents haven’t gone to school themselves and don't see the value of education.
Some children go to school for a couple of years, but then, because of their family circumstances, they quit early. Returning to school, after being absent for a while, is not easy. Often parents are ashamed and keep their children at home.
Young Focus has therefore launched the project Love2Learn. The project gives lessons to children aged between 6 and 14, who are not attending the local schools. For one year the children receive elementary-level lessons to motivate them to go (back) to school.
Love2Learn also focuses on the parents and involves them in the activities of the children. In this way the parents learn to see the value of education for their children.
The Young Focus Student Center has a special Love2Learn classroom where daily lessons are given.
The Love2Learn project was launched in 2010, and after a year of education a group of 30 children 'graduated', and are now being sponsored so that they can attend local elementary (primary) schools. For 2011/2012 we expect a new group of 50 children to sign up for the Love2Learn project.
Love2Learn is co-sponsored by 'Future First': an initiative of the HSBC (Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation).
